Kyle Gustafson is a freelance photographer and writer
currently living in Washington D.C. He moved to D.C. in the summer of 2004
after seven years in New York City. He spent his time in the shadow of the Evil Empire slaving
away in the music industry, working on projects with artists like R.E.M., Beck,
William Orbit and Beth Orton as well as movies like Fight Club and School of Rock. Tired of being
paid in CDs and concert tickets, he decided he needed a change and eventually
ended up heading south. He now works in e-media and has no regrets about giving
up his rock and roll lifestyle.
Since moving to D.C., he has manifested his love of
music, specifically live music, by taking up photography. He generally goes to
local clubs to see bands perform anywhere from two to four nights a week,
always with camera in tow. That's him up front, trying to squeeze by people so
he can get as close to the stage as possible. His work has appeared on many
different media outlets, including Pitchforkmedia.com, Readexpress.com,
Spinner.com, Washingtonian.com, HuffingtonPost.com, Gawker.com, Coolfer.com,
Gothamist.com and DCist.com (where he serves as a senior editor).
He began blogging in early 2003 and served as
co-sports editor of Gothamist in early
2004 before becoming a founding member of DCist later in the year. Born in
Massachusettes (Go Sox!),
he grew up in North Carolina and graduated from East Carolina many moons ago,
where he was a club DJ as well as music director of the campus radio station.

on concert photography, (Kyle) would be a likely candidate to teach it." -
